The BE-WASHED ProgramBeroya Gospel Fellowship is working to bring water to Ugandan communities through our BE-WASHED program. BE-WASHED stands for Beroya Water and Sanitation Health Education Development. The program's goal is two-fold: to create community sources for safe water by drilling shallow wells, and to educate Ugandans about the importance of personal hygiene and clean water. Sanitation and latrine use is the other facet of the BE-WASHED Program. Only 15% of the population in the Magada sub-county of the Namutumba District uses latrines regularly. Open defecation is common, and children's feces is not viewed as a source of contamination. Hand washing after visiting the latrine is not a routine practice due to lack of education and abundant water. Facilities for washing hands are largely non-existant, and therefore secondary contamination of food and water is common. The goal of the BE-WASHED program is to increase latrine-use to close to 60%, and to educate people about the importance of personal hygiene, thereby reducing instances of contamination and illness. BE-WASHED Project Goals
BE-WASHED Project ImpactThe village of Buteme has its first reliable, potable water source in living memory. The water from the borehole is clean and pure, and the borehole is used daily by dozens of families. We need your support to bring the gift of water to more communities in the region.
